MK Hennigan is an appetizer and bourbon ball queen who also makes a mean cocktail! MK is the owner of In the Curious Kitchen where she takes her grandmothers' southern recipes and re-works them with her own twist. Today we are going to learn how to make the most classic of all cocktails~ the Old Fashioned. Listen in as MK gives us tips and tricks to make the best version of this iconic cocktail. To me, the ice is a key component and the drink tastes even better as the ice melts a bit. Grab your ingredients and make it along with us to help toast whatever you are celebrating today!
For one drink, you will need...
Classic Old Fashioned Cocktail
2 oz. Kentucky Bourbon
1 sugar cube
Angostura Bitters
Orange Peel
1 tsp water
1 large ice cube
Using an old-fashioned cocktail glass, place sugar cube in the bottom of the glass.
3 drops of bitters and a teaspoon of water
Muddle the sugar, bitters and water until sugar dissolves.
Add large ice cube. Add bourbon.
Stil to chill.
Twist orange peel and use to garnish the drink.
Enjoy!
As you will hear from MK in the video, you can add cherry juice or other fruit juice in place of water for a more modern twist on an Old Fashioned (oh, the irony).

I have always been curious where the name of this drink came from, and so I looked it up after MK and I talked about it. Before Prohibition, the original mixture was strictly bourbon, bitters, water, and sugar- with an orange peel. After Prohibition, bartenders began getting creative with the drink by adding fruit juices such as orange, cherry or pineapple. They would also use powdered sugar and top off the drink with a splash of soda water. For those who preferred the original version unaltered would request their drink the old-fashioned way. And, that is where the name originated. Truly one of the oldest cocktails in the book- still going strong hundreds of years later!
I look froward to experimenting with some of the juices to see what I like. It only takes a splash to make a difference- but I love the idea of experimenting with the flavors! What about you- are you an Old Fashioned fan? I would love to hear what your favorite cocktail is~ you can add it in the Group section of The Supper Club and we can swap ideas and recipes. Or if there is a cocktail that you would like to learn to make- feel free to suggest it! Here is the recipe for Figgy Piggies that MK mentioned in our video. You may also like to try this cocktail by MK.
Maybe we can get MK to share a cocktail again soon! Be sure to follow MK on her website and on Instagram. There's a lot more to come from that curious kitchen of hers! Thank you, MK! Cheers to you!
