Setting a wintry table makes me think of snow drifts, reflections, birds, and ~of course~the colors white and winter-white. Growing up, my mom always emphasized the idea of wearing ivory over pure white in the winter and had us pack away our white summer clothes. Although those white "rules" have changed a bit, I still think of winter-white as a beautiful color to wear and to use in our homes in the winter. There is a little bit of warmth in the vanilla colored shade of winter-white, and I think that is what draws me to it each winter. It is understated and sophisticated, and I love adding it to a table setting in January! Here is how I incorporate the shades of white in a wintry table setting for a dinner party or family dinner!
When setting this winter table, start with a simple white table cloth and build on it to create the look that reflects your style and considers those who will be seated around the table. I layer tablecloths and fabrics when I set a table- and for this table I layered white on white on white...
To create the feel of snow drifts, I bunched sheer white fabric down the center of the table both vertically and horizontally. The fabric was in a "t" shape, but bunched to look more natural and flowing.
Creating the look of winter on a table can be enhanced with metallics and reflections done tastefully. Here, I started with a rectangular beveled mirror for a placemat. White china with gold trim is a classic look that works perfectly for this table. I also mixed in silver with utensils and glassware. The utensils are a mix of mother of pearl and silver and the wine glasses are silver-pated next to a crystal water glass. All of these colder metals give the vibe of winter.
Another way that I added in reflective pieces was by using vintage bird ornaments. These birds are clip-on ornaments originally intended for a Christmas tree, but I loved using them to add some charm and a little bit of color to the winter table. Birds are the animals I see the most when I look out of a window in the winter- they always seem to be so busy outside while everything else is so quiet. Having a scattering of birds on a wintry table is fun and whimsical. They can be made from whatever you prefer- they don't have to be ornaments. But, I also really love the tinsel tail feathers that these birds offer to the party! :) I clipped them in various places around the table- you can see below I added a bird to the monogrammed ribbon napkin twilly.
One of my favorite places to add a little bird was on a milkglass dish filled with champagne popcorn. The small bowl of popcorn can double as a name place card by adding a name to each one, and the popcorn gives everyone a unique table topic when they are first seated. It's an icebreaker and also fits perfectly into the theme. I attached smaller birds to the milkglass edges as though they were enjoying a little snack.
For flowers, you can see I shopped for a variety of flowers in white. I used a white tulip vase (tulipiere) to arrange them so that it was easy to have them stay in place by using the holes in the tulipiere. You can use a flower frog for the same idea if you are learning how to arrange flowers- or to save time when arranging flowers!
Another way to add a cozy feel to a wintry table (or any table) is to add house plants around the table. I added Schefflera to lightweight urns and weighted the urns with towels. I covered the top of the urn with magnolia and cedar leaves to cover up the potted plant. I put in a tall wrought iron shepherd's hook in each urn and strung cafe lights between the hooks. The trees and lights created a beautiful little "room" for the table and made the feel of the table so inviting. For the best impact, I suggest using 4 plants, but 2 plants will be beautiful. These plants are houseplants and can then be used in your home or covered porch.
I hope this table setting inspires you to be creative this winter. Remember to let your own style shine through and to use items from your home that you already have. You will be amazed at what you have that will look beautiful on a table setting! For more details, see the video below. It is a re-make of our original Wintry Reflection Tablescape.
